Request to Update to a Newer SCORM Version

The UC Davis LIT team has requested that we consider whether the LMS could support a newer SCORM version (e.g., SCORM 2004) instead of relying solely on the current SCORM standard.

While developing recent eLearnings, the LIT team identified limitations associated with the current SCORM version that create challenges during course development. These limitations can make it more difficult to build accessible learning experiences and require additional development workarounds, particularly when learner navigation is locked. They also noted that the current standard can contribute to inconsistent course behavior across different web browsers.

According to the LIT team, a newer SCORM version could provide benefits such as:

  • Improved content sequencing and learner navigation.
  • Better learner progress tracking and bookmarking.
  • Improved compatibility with assistive technologies and accessibility features.
  • More consistent performance across browsers.
  • Greater flexibility for developing interactive and scenario-based learning experiences.

The LIT team recognizes this would be a significant undertaking rather than a simple system update. They understand that upgrading could require LMS infrastructure changes (such as API updates and additional storage) and migration of existing SCORM courses to a newer format. They are not requesting an immediate change, but rather asking that this topic be brought forward for discussion to better understand the feasibility, potential benefits, and any considerations that would need to be evaluated if support for a newer SCORM standard were explored in the future.
